About Balwin, Edmonton
Balwin is a mature residential neighborhood in northeast Edmonton, with development spanning from post-World War II through the 1980s. It features a mix of single-family homes and rental properties, with nearly a quarter of residences being apartment buildings. Surrounding neighborhoods include Delwood, Belvedere, Elmwood Park, and Killarney.
Originally annexed in 1912, Balwin was historically known as “Packingtown” due to its proximity to meatpacking plants. The neighborhood’s layout reflects different periods of subdivision: the eastern section follows a grid pattern from the early 1900s, while the western portion, developed in the late 1950s, has a curvilinear street design. Balwin offers well-established parks, schools, and convenient access to major roadways. Its name combines those of early landowners Frank Ball and Luke Winterburn.nity.
