About Cumberland, Edmonton
Cumberland is a neighbourhood in northwest Edmonton, located within the Palisades Plan Area. It is bordered by 153rd Avenue to the north, 142nd Street to the west, Cumberland Road to the south, and 127th Street to the east. Before urban development, the area was primarily used for agriculture.
Residential development began in the 1990s, with most construction occurring in the early 2000s. Cumberland is a low-density community, with nearly all homes being single-detached. The neighbourhood includes a park in the northeast and a network of pathways running through linear parks, offering pedestrian connections and green spaces.
A stormwater management facility, designed as a small lake, sits at the centre of the community, while a natural tree stand is preserved south of 150th Avenue. These features provide residents with scenic open spaces and recreational opportunities.
Cumberland follows the Palisades area tradition of naming neighbourhoods after early forts and trading posts. It is named after Cumberland House, the first inland trading post of the Hudson’s Bay Company. Built in 1774 by Samuel Hearne on the Saskatchewan River, the post was named in honor of Prince Rupert, Duke of Cumberland.
