About McCauley, Edmonton
McCauley is a historic Edmonton neighbourhood named after the city’s first mayor, Matthew McCauley. Development began in earnest after 1908 when a streetcar line was introduced, spurring growth in the area. Located close to Edmonton’s central business district, McCauley has undergone some redevelopment while maintaining its primarily residential character.
A defining feature of McCauley is its strong multicultural presence, with roadways attracting distinct ethnic businesses, including Italian, Portuguese, and Chinese communities. Edmonton’s Little Italy and Chinatown are located here, offering a diverse range of shops, restaurants, and cultural landmarks.
The neighbourhood is bounded by the CNR right-of-way to the south and major roadways such as 101 Street and Norwood Boulevard. Several prominent features define McCauley, including Commonwealth Stadium and the many churches along 96 Street, known as “Church Street.” These elements contribute to McCauley’s unique historical and cultural identity within Edmonton.
