About Mill Woods Town Centre, Edmonton
Between 1876 and 1891, the Mill Woods area was settled by a Métis-Cree band led by John Papaschase. After the Papaschase reserve was abandoned in 1891, the land became part of Edmonton’s agricultural belt. In 1970, the Alberta government established a land bank to address rising land costs, and the City of Edmonton began developing the area in 1971.
In 1969, the City designated land at Mill Woods’ center for a Town Centre, bounded by 34th Avenue, 23rd Avenue, 50th Street, and 66th Street. The plan included a regional shopping mall, offices, institutions, and high-density housing. West of Hewes Way is primarily non-residential, with Mill Woods Shopping Centre occupying most of the space. To the east, mixed commercial and residential developments emerged.
Residential construction in Mill Woods Town Centre began in the 1990s, consisting entirely of apartments oriented around a central park and water feature. The area was named for Mill Creek and the surrounding groves of trees.
