About Newton, Edmonton
Newton is a historic Edmonton neighbourhood with roots dating back to before its annexation in the early 20th century. The area was absorbed through two annexations—its northern section joining Edmonton in 1912 with the town of North Edmonton, and its southern section following in 1913. Prior to 1947, the southeast portion of Newton was closely connected to the former mining town of Beverly. Unlike Edmonton’s newer neighbourhoods, Newton’s development spanned several decades, resulting in a mix of traditional grid layouts in the south and a modified grid system in the north. Many homes in the southern half were built before World War II, while development in the northwest continued into the late 1990s.
Newton is primarily a residential neighbourhood, featuring mostly single-detached homes with some low-density multi-family and apartment units. The community is home to a central school site with two elementary schools, three parks, and a small commercial centre adjacent to the schools. Additional commercial amenities can be found along 118th Avenue, which forms the neighbourhood’s southern boundary. Newton was named in honor of Reverend William Newton, an Anglican minister who arrived in Edmonton in 1875 and established a church and hospital east of Fort Edmonton that same year.
