About Rundle Heights, Edmonton
Rundle Heights is a northeast Edmonton neighbourhood with roots dating back to 1882, when the area consisted of two land holdings near the Edmonton Settlement. While some development occurred early near 111th Avenue, most of the land remained rural until Edmonton annexed it in 1961. Residential growth began in the southwest during the 1960s, featuring small-scale row housing and apartment buildings. Development then expanded north and east, with single-detached homes in the eastern portion built in the early 1970s, followed by additional apartment and row house complexes throughout the decade.
The neighbourhood’s curvilinear and cul-de-sac street layout reflects the post-1960s suburban design. At its center, an educational and recreational site provides essential community amenities, while commercial businesses are conveniently located along 118 Avenue, including Abbottsfield Mall. A portion of the area previously served as a landfill for Beverly but was officially closed in 1972. The land was then restored and converted into Rundle Park, a major recreational space in the North Saskatchewan River Valley. Rundle Heights is named after Reverend Robert Rundle, the first Protestant missionary in the Edmonton area, whose legacy is also honored by Mount Rundle near Banff, Alberta.
