About Rutherford, Edmonton
Rutherford is a growing neighbourhood in southwest Edmonton, located within the Heritage Valley Servicing Concept Design Brief (SCDB) area. It is bordered by Ellerslie Road (9th Avenue) to the north, 111th Street to the east, 25th Avenue to the south, and 119th/127th Streets to the west. Before urban development, Rutherford was primarily an agricultural area with some country residential properties along the western boundary.
Designed for a balance of residential, recreational, and commercial spaces, Rutherford features a mix of low and medium-density housing. Multi-family developments are strategically placed near natural amenities, shopping areas, schools, and transit routes. The neighbourhood includes a central school and park site, with additional green spaces such as Virginia Park Woodland offering recreational opportunities. A key pedestrian corridor runs diagonally through Rutherford, connecting pathways to parks and community activity centers.
Rutherford is named after Alexander Cameron Rutherford (1857-1941), Alberta’s first premier, elected in 1905. A significant figure in Edmonton’s history, Rutherford played a vital role in establishing the University of Alberta, where he later served as chancellor. His historic home, located on the university’s north campus, remains a landmark today.
